About the course

This course aims to provide students with a working knowledge of film screenplay structure and musical score through an exploration of great American films from the 1940s to the present. By analyzing the interaction between the fifteen common screenplay “beats” and musical parameters, we hope to provide an understanding of how these aspects of film production work together in storytelling. This in turn should provide students with tools with which to analyze and discuss the technical and moral value of any movie and an enhanced appreciation for the history of American film.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. List and summarize the import of all fifteen common screenplay beats
  2. Listen to music more critically
  3. Intelligently discuss the interaction between the score and screenplay in any movie
  4. Conclude on the the overall moral value of a film
