Intro to Traditional Logic

Before studying philosophers like Plato or C. S. Lewis, we need to understand logic. This course teaches basics of formal logic and practices application of this knowledge, thus strengthening essays and discussions.

Course Description

This semester-long course will help students learn the basics of formal logic, including the three logical processes of the mind, the various pitfalls of clearly defining terms, and the evaluation of premises in traditional syllogisms. Students with practice applying this basic knowledge to other areas of study in order to strengthen their analytical thinking, which will naturally lead to stronger essays and discussions.

Course Objectives

  • Understand basic building blocks of an idea
  • Comprehend proper sequencing of related ideas
  • Properly identify elements of a basic syllogism
  • Recognize syllogisms in everyday situations
  • Construct basic syllogisms
  • Test soundness of basic syllogisms
