Course Description

Join me as we venture through the fun and engaging stories of Roman life in Lingua Latina 1: Familia Romana, Chapters 1-13, using the best of both the inductive and deductive approaches to language acquisition.

Course Description
Through inductive learning (natural method), students will encounter Latin through contextual reading -- developing comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and reading fluency as we interpret fun, new stories of increasing complexity. We will practice reading Latin with correct pronunciation, asking and answering questions in Latin, and composing short excerpts of Latin prose.
In addition, students will be instructed with clear explanations of Latin grammar structures, taught in English with a deductive approach. Students will be able to fully analyze Latin grammar with accuracy, strengthening their knowledge of both Latin and English grammar, and gaining more precise comprehension, without the added stress of trying to understand explanations only given in Latin in the book and/or by an instructor.
Latin is a living classical language – still very much enduring, but no longer used conversationally in daily community. As such, I believe combining the best of the inductive and deductive approaches is an effective and less intimidating approach -- immersing ourselves in Latin as much as possible, while gaining all the benefits of clear and precise grammar instruction taught in English with less pressure and more enjoyment.
