Biography
I am a wife, mother, grandmother, and enthusiastic supporter of classical Christian education. I live in the East Mountains just outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico, with my husband Rob. We are empty-nesters with all three daughters happily married and our first beautiful grandbaby born just this last year. When not busy teaching, I try to be outside enjoying God’s creation as much as possible. I like spending time drinking coffee with my husband on the lovely deck he built for our mountain home (though not in the winter! Brrr!), spending time with our daughters’ families, reading (lots!), camping, reading while camping 😊, and snow skiing. I also greatly enjoy worshipping with our church family and serving as director of our children’s Sunday School Ministry in our small mountain community church, which we helped found in the spring of 2013.
Classical Education has been a prominent part of my life since my oldest daughter was just a toddler. While determining how best to educate our children, God’s Providence led us to classical Christian Education. Since then, I have taught in our own homeschool, two homeschool co-ops, a classical Christian private school, a classical state charter school, and as a private Latin tutor. I am VERY excited to be a part of the Kepler Community.
Teaching Philosophy
I have been a member of the Association of Classical and Christian Schools since 2005. Though my teaching in a state charter school has necessitated acquiring a New Mexico State Teaching License, I am of the very strong opinion that a true teacher is one who loves their subject, has the gifting (from God) and the skills necessary to convey that subject in an understandable and accessible way, and loves those whom they teach with the love of Christ.
I believe that true education is forming the heart to love Jesus Christ. As a classical Christian educator, it is my desire to point students to objective truth, beauty, and goodness, so the Holy Spirit may do His work in their hearts. The two scriptures that primarily guide my teaching philosophy are Mark 12:30 “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength,” and 1 Peter 3:15 “but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.”
I believe that parents are the primary educators of their children. It is the parents’ responsibility to “bring [their children] up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord,” (Ephesians 6:4). I also believe that parents may entrust others to help them in this endeavor. As such, it is my responsibility to take that precious trust seriously, to show others’ children the love of Christ, and to maintain accountability to parents to teach what I have been entrusted to teach.
Statement of Faith
I am a Reformed Christian and adhere to the Statement of Faith of the church we helped found – Cedar Springs Church, Cedar Crest, NM. I also adhere to the Apostles Creed, The Nicene Creed, and the Westminster Confession of Faith.
