This course will survey the history and literature of Western concert music. The ancient, medieval, baroque, classical, romantic, and 20th c. eras will encompass the scope of this course. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the representative musical genres, composers, compositions, and the cultural contexts which helped shape the development of music.

Course Objectives:

  1. Critically engage the craft of music as an analytical thinker and listener.
  2. Communicate effectively about Western art music’s development with consideration of its cultural, political, religious, and economic contexts.

About the teacher

Sean Bohnet Sean lives in Moscow, ID with his wife Rachel where he serves as a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Idaho. He earned his B.A. in Music History from Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, TX.
