About the course

The reading and study of Scripture is vital for the life of any Christian, but the daily habit of reading can often be daunting, especially for young people. This introduction to the Bible for 7th and 8th graders will focus on extended readings from Scripture, conversations about what we read, and helping fill out some of the cultural context that helps us understand the riches of God’s Word. Class sessions will be a mix of lecture, reading Scripture out loud together, and discussion. Between classes, students will read both sections of Scripture and excerpts from various books that will fill out their understanding.

Course Objectives:

  1. To introduce students to the content, structure, and language of the Old and New Testaments.
  2. To equip students to read the Bible on their own for understanding, enjoyment, and worship.
  3. To instill a love for Scripture in students by shared experience and discovery.

Texts:

  • The Bible, any English translation (no paraphrases such as The Message)
