About the course

Did you know that 50% of the English language is derived from Latin? This includes the root vocabulary from the modern sciences, law, theology, as well as current standardized tests like the ACT and SAT that draw heavily upon Latin. These are practical reasons to study Latin, but above these the study of Latin helps form a precise, consistent, and orderly mind - not unlike the Roman legions of long ago. In other words, the study of Latin shapes the contours of the mind, the way we think and develop as humans. This course is centered on the fundamentals and leverages vocabulary, grammar, and basic translation in an approach appropriate for the absolute beginner. Using the award-winning First Form Latin text by Memoria Press, Scott will help your student master the Present and Perfect System of the first two conjugations, as well as 1st through 5th Declension Nouns, and Cardinal and Ordinal numbers and other elements of the Latin grammar. We’ll follow a traditional approach to Latin, emphasizing a grammar-first approach that harmonizes with learning 180 vocabulary words along with a focused approach to reading and translation.

Please Note: This course is entirely appropriate for high school students who have had no Latin background but desire a focused, manageable course of instruction in Latin.
