About the course

At the beginning students will learn hiragana and katakana (the Japanese alphabet), pronunciation, and basic greetings. It will take at least a semester to learn this material. Students will also learn scripture verses in Japanese. For the following semesters they will learn verb conjugations, basic vocabulary and grammatical structures. The textbook that will be used for this class is called Minna No Nihongo Book 1. Students will develop a beginning reading and conversational ability, laying the foundation for further study of the language.

Course Objectives:

  1. Students will be able to converse in Japanese and use the simple elements they have learned from this course to possibly pursue a long-term vision for future fluency, and to begin to understand Japanese.

About the teacher

Tomoko Sanders Tomoko was born and raised in Osaka, Japan, received her teaching credentials at KEC Japanese School, and earned a B.A in Japanese Linguistics at Osaka International College in 2007. She lives in Ogden, UT where she homeschools her two young children.
