LTW 1: Learn the tools of classical composition, while exploring the works of American Authors.

Course Description

In this course, students will be equipped with the tools of classical composition to face the universal challenges that every writer encounters: coming up with ideas, organizing ideas, and expressing ideas appropriately. Students will practice evaluating the decisions of characters in American Literature. They will then practice the skills of rhetoric through composing and supporting a persuasive essay.

PREREQUISITES:
This course is for students in 9th-12th grades.
Ability to print class documents.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to:

  • Evaluate a decision from the affirmative and negative perspectives.
  • Explore ideas using questions from the Five Common Topics
  • Organize ideas into an outline
  • Express ideas clearly and effectively

In addition, students will be introduced to the following skills:

  • Reading closely with the highlighting method
  • Organizing completed work as artififacts
  • Keeping a Commonplace book



Weekly Time Commitment
1.5 hours participating in a live-interactive class
1-2 hours completing LTW assignments
1-2 hours reading and annotating assigned text

  • 1.5” Three-ring binder with five divider tabs (for organizing completed work, instructions will be given in class. Required
  • Small notebook to keep as a commonplace book. Students can choose one that reflects their taste, but it must be used solely for keeping quotes from literature. Required
  • Highlighters (Must contain the colors: blue, pink, yellow, orange, green, purple)Required

  • Lost Tools of Writing Level 1 Student Book (book) Available Here Students will not write in the book so that it may be used in future classes. However, the student workbook will be referenced in every lesson. Required
  • 1.5" three ring binder with five dividers (equipment) Available Here Students will be expected to organize completed work. Upon completion of the course, they will have an artifact to reference as they continue through the Lost Tools Levels. Students will need five dividers such as these, https://a.co/d/hxQ3tlo Instructions for setting up their notebook will be explained in class. Required
  • Commonplace book (Something similar to the one found in this link) (book) Available Here Students will learn to keep a commonplace book. This should be a notebook that is exclusively for keeping commonplace passages. Students may make additions to a previous commonplace book. Students may choose a commonplace book that reflects their style and creativity. Required
  • Highlighters (Pink, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple (if possible) (equipment) Available Here Highlighters do not have to be brand-specific, but must include the colors pink, blue, yellow, green, and orange. Purple is not required, but can be helpful. Required
