Section A

Dickens and the Law

Tuesday, 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

This course introduces the basics of English law as it was practiced in the nineteenth century, mainly through the novels of Charles Dickens, but also those of Nathanial Hawthorne and Hermann Melville.

Course Description

This course introduces the basics of English law as depicted in the nineteenth century novels of Charles Dickens and two other writers, used as comparisons. The course investigates how the English common law is presented, how it worked in the nineteenth century, and the social, legal, and other commentary that Dickens and the other authors offered. The course will use literature as a source of history. Nineteenth century English society will be investigated.
We will also look at how Dickens and the other authors develop characters as these characters faced the often-bleak circumstances of their lives.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able to analyze these novels as social commentaries. They will be acquainted with the history, social issues, and English common law of the nineteenth century, with a particular emphasis on the Christian elements that were present or lacking in that society. How did nineteenth century England try to live up to its Christian ideals? What was the common law and how did it work? Was the common law a Christian and just law? How do Dickens and the other authors explore these issues? Were people in nineteenth century England aware of justice as a concept in law, society, and Christianity? The theme of renewal or reform will also be discussed.
