Full Year
Section A: Thursdays 9:00-10:45 Eastern Time (6:00-7:45 AM Pacific Time)
Prerequisites: Precalculus or Saxon Advanced Math (completed or currently taking)
NOTE: Upon CCU review, this course should be re-approved for optional Dual Enrollment Credit (PHY 210/212 General Physics I and Lab) through Kepler's Partnership with Colorado Christian University's Dual Credit Program via CCU Academy. See details below. Parents and students should schedule a meeting with Mrs. Santoro before enrolling in CCU's Dual Credit Program.
Physics I with Video Labs is a classical, Christian approach to the liberal arts of mathematics and physical science. This course uses 1) the student textbook and optional video lectures for didactic instruction and diligent development of intellectual skills and habits, 2) LABSTER virtual simulation labs and DIVE video labs for practice with the scientific method and an introduction to physics lab equipment normally cost-prohibitive for home use, and 3) class time for recitations, questions, and discussions.
NOTE: the LABSTER fee is non-refundable. # This course consists of two semesters and offers 1.0 high-school credit and optional 5.0 collegiate credits through CCU. John Saxon’s method of incremental topic development is based on the premise that “physics is not difficult … just different, and time and practice comprise the elixir that turns ideas that are new and intimidating into concepts that are familiar” (ix). Incidentally, the 100 lessons in Saxon Physics "covers in considerable depth all of the topics normally presented in the first two semesters of an engineering physics course" (ix). (Pending CCU approval, we will cover 88 of the 100 Lessons in Saxon Physics.) While this course will cover some topics also found in Physics II, the exams, recitations, discussions, and labs will focus on Physics I concepts. Each semester, students will be assigned assignments and will attend live recitations as an active participant. Students should expect to expend time and effort in line with an honors/advanced/AP Physics course. Additional semester and final exams are required for students enrolled in CCU's Dual Credit Program.
*Problem Sets will not be submitted as assignments and will be used at home to prepare for class and practice fluency. Students or parents should have access to the Solutions Manual as it shows the step-by-step solutions for each problem, whereas the Answer Key only provides the final answer.
Attendance is a vital part of this course; therefore, students must attend class sessions and actively participate in discussions. Unless stated otherwise, students are expected to have completed the assignments before coming to class. Although the recitations will be recorded, a student cannot participate while watching a recording.
Punctuality, preparation, and participation are paramount in this course and are part of responsibility as one grows from childhood to adulthood. Planned or emergency absences should be communicated to the teacher, the earlier the better. Punctuality, preparation for class presentations and discussions, and meaningful and relevant participation will be assessed at teacher’s discretion.
Upon CCU review, this course should be re-approved for Dual Enrollment Credit through Kepler's Partnership with Colorado Christian University's Dual Credit Program | CCU Academy. This optional dual-credit course must be completed with a grade of C or higher to be considered for college transfer credit.
