Jonathan Roberts

about the teacher

Jonathan Roberts hails from Aguascalientes, Mexico. He is the director of the Ancient Language Institute and has enjoyed teaching Latin to hundreds of students over the years, who have ranged from middle schoolers to college professors. Jonathan has previously taught Latin at Great Hearts Academies, and Veritas Scholars Academy.

Jonathan graduated from The King’s College in New York City with a degree in Politics, Philosophy, & Economics, and was awarded a Master of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Missouri in 2017. He is currently at work on a Latin reader that uses graded, comprehensible input to introduce Latin students to Roman history.

Teaching Philosophy

Life is short and every second a gift from God. Therefore, one of the pillars of my teaching philosophy is - steward your students's time wisely! Don't waste their time in the classroom, don't waste their time by assigning busy work, don't use teaching methods that don't yield fruit.

This last point is especially important to learning languages. For some time, it has been assumed that learning a "dead" language is different from learning a living one. So, instead of reading and writing stories, composing sentences and speaking, students instead memorize grammar charts and …
