About the course
This course will offer an in-depth reading and discussion of Shakespeare’s tragedy, The Tragical History of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. The play will offer a setting for discussion surrounding the nature of Shakespearean tragedy, the arts of rhetorical poetics and decision-making, and the implications of Shakespeare’s work on our everyday lives. Students will use Hamlet as a backdrop for writing a classically oriented academic essay.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, learners will:
- Identify and understand the plot elements that comprise Hamlet
- Hone their close-reading skills
- Be able to identify and apply the truths of Hamlet to their own lives
- Practice the assessment and judgement of a classical text and the actions of its characters
- Create a logically sound, beautifully structured academic essay

About the teacher
Mary Patricia Rogers
Mary Pat lives with her husband and two children in New Mexico. She has a Masters in English from the University of Dallas and a Bachelor's in English and Writing from McMurry University. She enjoys cooking, watercolor painting, and fern spotting.
