About the course

This course is a guided exploration of music within God’s created order. Integrating their critical thinking skills developed from other liberal arts training, students will examine and discuss musical phenomena from the ground level up. Students with extensive musical training will gain valuable insights into understanding their craft and role as musicians more deeply. Students with little to no musical experience will acquire an essential understanding of what music is and how it functions within God’s created order.

This music theory course is unique in how much emphasis will be placed on the Socratic discussions following each recorded lecture. Students will be challenged to articulate their growing understanding of music with universal principles that find their telos in the glory of God. As music does not consist of mere words, students will also engage with music hands-on with basic composition tools.

Course Objectives:

  1. Read and write basic music notation.
  2. Understand and discuss the mathematical foundation of harmony and rhythm.
  3. Understand and discuss the nature of melody.
  4. Develop basic skills in identifying musical objects and analyzing their significance within a musical context.
  5. Create original compositions.
  6. Broaden musical horizon through exposure to great music of various periods and styles.
