About the course
This course is a meditation on three classics of American literature. The texts chosen are Narrative of Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. Each text wrestles with classic American ideals all American citizens have wrestled to embrace, such as equality, freedom, independence, perseverance, progress, etc. We will discern America’s good, true, and beautiful attributes through these rich texts.
Teacher
J. Bartolo Cruz is a classical educator who loves to study theology, church history, and the classics. He is an adjunct professor at St. Andrew’s Academy & College. He has taught and been involved in classical education for half a decade. He has earned two B.A.’s in Philosophy and Religious Studies from Arizona State University, an M.A. in Classical Theology from Biola University, Talbot School of Theology, and is currently in the M.T.S. program at Cranmer Theological House. He is preparing for Holy Orders in the Anglican Church. He has been married to Elizabeth since 2021 and they have identical twin boys.
