About the course

This course is a meditation on three classics of American literature. The texts chosen are Narrative of Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. Each text wrestles with classic American ideals all American citizens have wrestled to embrace, such as equality, freedom, independence, perseverance, progress, etc. We will discern America’s good, true, and beautiful attributes through these rich texts.
