About the course
This intensive class is for the seasoned French student who has demonstrated proficiency in 1st and 2nd year French classes and is interested in a challenging course which will equip them for future French studies in college, for travel and/or missions in French speaking countries and for continued enjoyment of French language, literature and art.
Our book, Trésors du Temps, is considered a classic and is written entirely in French. Each chapter consists of historical and literary texts, a grammar section and a culture and art section. The vocabulary is rich and varied and the assignments are targeted for proficiency and creative engagement with others.
Students coming into this class must be able to read, speak and write (and spell) in French at a third-year level and will be expected to fully participate in class activities that will continue to develop these skills.
Course Objectives:
- Students will be able to navigate with proficiency in the passé composé and future tenses and in the conditional mode. (If time allows, we will study the subjunctive mode as well.)
- They will be able to read and comprehend French texts and discuss them primarily in French.
- They will be able to write about their own ideas and convey these thoughts to their classmates.
We will focus primarily on the history of France and enjoy the cultural treasures of France in literature, art and architecture.
Assignments will include:
- Daily written and spoken practice.
- Quizzes, original sentences and short essays on a variety of subjects.
- Group activities like short debates, oral recitations and descriptions.
- There will be a test at the end of every chapter and a cumulative test each semester.
