About the course

The Bible is the greatest work of literary art because it was the work of God. This course will teach through this highest of all texts with emphasis on understanding the unity of the whole story through understanding the particular style of biblical authors. We will develop an understanding of characterization, plotting, literary structure, themes, patterns, and symbolism in order to uncover the moral and theological messages of God’s Word.

The class is 32 weeks and will weekly have a 1 hour recorded lecture and a 1 hour live recitation along with readings from the Bible as well as the secondary texts. Each quarter the students will complete one 500-700 word essay and an exam.

Course Objectives:

  1. To understand the unity of the story of Scripture
  2. To develop the literary skills to unfold the meaning of a biblical text
  3. To acquire the tools to properly apply biblical texts

  • Bible (ESV, RSV, or NRSV)
  • A House for My Name by Peter Leithart
  • The Four by Peter Leithart

John Higgins John grew up in a Christian home and was baptized in the Evangelical Free Church. He earned an M.A. Historical and Systematic Theology and a B.A. in Philosophy/Bible at Wheaton College. He hosts a YouTube channel called The Bible is Art.
