About the course

The ultimate goal of this course is to glorify God by fostering human flourishing. Human flourishing includes honoring what is Good, True, and Beautiful. It is in this context that students will examine texts from the Middle Ages. This course will use the Old Western Culture: Christendom materials from Roman Roads Press. Students will engage with medieval texts spanning from 476 A.D. to the early 1500’s. This integrated humanities course will be divided into eight-week quarters. Students will be assigned weekly readings, watch weekly lectures, develop weekly questions for class discussions, and participate in engaging weekly class discussions. In addition, students will have an exam and be required to write one 1200-word essay per quarter.

Course Objectives:

  1. To foster human flourishing by focusing on the Good, True, and Beautiful
  2. To reflect the image of God by being active, rational, creative, moral, responsible, and faithful
  3. To become familiar with the history, philosophy, and literature of the Middle Ages
  4. To engage in critical thinking by practicing close reading of texts, developing interpretive questions, and participating in Socratic discussions
  5. To demonstrate how to think critically, Christianly, and write persuasively

About the teacher

Dr. Christi Seaward Dr. Seaward earned a B.A. in Liberal Arts and an M.A. in Humanities from California State University, Dominguez Hills. She became an Air Force wife in 1992 and has lived in Oklahoma, Colorado, South Korea, Japan, Hawaii, and Florida.
