About the course

In this survey course, the student will explore the scientific and aesthetic development of photography, along with its history. Probing the evolution of the camera and film through the lens of the inventor and the artist.

Course Objectives:

Chronologically, the student will study a diverse group of photographers and their works and gain an understanding of photography as an art medium, uncovering its history, photographic processes, and how photography is both an art form and a method of communication.

Learning Outcomes:

Through this course of study, you will gain a deeper understanding of and be able to:

  1. Discuss the ancient knowledge of the projective image and the camera obscura.
  2. Appreciate 19th- Century Portraiture.
  3. Explore the first cameras and permanent images.
  4. Explain the French contribution to photography
  5. Present the development of the daguerreotype.
  6. Elaborate on the science, technology, and chemistry involved in photography.
  7. Research war photography and how it modified people's perceptions.
  8. Discuss how instant images and the digital age have changed our responses to images.
  9. Illustrate how pictures and words work in print media.
  10. Explain Japan’s contribution to photographic equipment.
  11. Build a pinhole camera and develop a negative.

About the teacher

Roxana Corradino Prof. Corradino earned a B.F.A. from Florida International University in 2000 where she currently teaches Performance Art, Art History I, Art History II, and Exploring Art. She received an M.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2003.
