Teaching Philosophy

Mr. Rutt sees physical education as training for slaying the dragon. If we are to raise our children to be arrows to fire against the wiles of the devil, children and young adults need to be fit for battle. They must also be prepared to protect their family in a time of need and not be soft. This is the basis for physical education and Mr. Rutt’s great desire is to motivate and inspire children and young adults to be fit for battle.

The methods that have worked the best for physical training of children up to adults has not changed over time. The basics of Agility, Balance, Coordination and Strength are key to being fit for battle. Mr. Rutt, along with many classical physical educators see that combative training, running, swimming and off the ground training are key factors in building a healthy and fit body that is prepared to slay any dragon they encounter.

Mr. Rutt received his bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts with an emphasis on Elementary Education from Colorado Christian University. After his undergrad, he received his Master of Education degree in Physical Education from the University of Arkansas.

He first started teaching in the Great Hearts Academies in Phoenix, Arizona in 2011 as an elementary physical education teacher. He has taught with Great Hearts Academies for 9 years and during his time he was also the director of athletics and a dean of students. Mr. Rutt grew in his appreciation for classical education during his time with Great Hearts Academies. His desire to be in classical Christian education brought him to a classical Christian academy in Wyoming. He taught physical education and built sports programs for 4 years at Jackson Hole Classical Academy.

Over his career, Mr. Rutt has grown to appreciate the classical approach to physical training and education. He was inspired early on in his teaching career to think more rigorously about teaching physical education even to young children. He believes that learning fundamental physical skills apart from sports is key to the success of an athlete over time. The current model in most schools of teaching sports and games in physical education has wrought much of the injury prone athletes we see today. The physical training of centuries past produced athletes who had great posture, strength, preparedness for war and ability to protect family and country.

In order to bring better physical education resources to homeschool children, Mr. Rutt started Adventure PE (www.adventurepe.com) in 2023. This program is a comprehensive homeschool PE program for Kindergarten through 5th graders that can be completed from home. He hopes to be able to bring quality physical education into the home.
