Jonathan Roberts
about the teacher
Jonathan Roberts hails from Aguascalientes, Mexico. He is the director of the Ancient Language Institute and has enjoyed teaching Latin to hundreds of students over the years, who have ranged from middle schoolers to college professors. Jonathan has previously taught Latin at Great Hearts Academies, and Veritas Scholars Academy.
Jonathan graduated from The King’s College in New York City with a degree in Politics, Philosophy, & Economics, and was awarded a Master of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Missouri in 2017. He is currently at work on a Latin reader that uses graded, comprehensible input to introduce Latin students to Roman history.
Teaching Philosophy
Life is short and every second a gift from God. Therefore, one of the pillars of my teaching philosophy is - steward your students's time wisely! Don't waste their time in the classroom, don't waste their time by assigning busy work, don't use teaching methods that don't yield fruit.
This last point is especially important to learning languages. For some time, it has been assumed that learning a "dead" language is different from learning a living one. So, instead of reading and writing stories, composing sentences and speaking, students instead memorize grammar charts and vocabulary lists. This method is a waste of student life.
In my courses, we will approach Latin as a language that can actually be learned and used actively!
Statement of Faith
I am a Protestant of the Reformed tradition and currently attend Trinity Reformed Church in Moscow, Idaho.
The inspired Word of God teaches us that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, the King, and Savior of the world.
At the end of the age, Christ will come to judge the living and the dead. Those who have put their faith in him will rise to glory and everlasting life.
