about the teacher

Originally hailing from Western Washington, my family moved to rural North Central Missouri when I was 9, where we raised a plethora of small animals before briefly running a cattle operation. After being home schooled K-12, I attended Hillsdale College in Michigian, where I fell in love with Western culture and the Great Books. As a teacher, I am deeply indebted to so many wise and virtuous professors whose example I seek to emulate in my own classroom. On Summer breaks, I staffed for a Christian leadership camp for Christian youth, spending many hours talking worldviews, apologetics, books, and life with students.

In 2008, I took a position at a classical Christian school in St. Louis, MO, where I still teach to this day. In addition to teaching literature and history (and the occasional Latin, Composition, and Rhetoric classes as needed), I also serve as Director of Faculty Training.

In 2018, I completed the Circe Institute's Teacher Apprenticeship Program and am a Circe-certified Master Teacher. I have also supported other Circe programs, such as Lost Tools of Teaching workshops, and Atrium programs on David Hicks' Norms and Nobility. I have also led workshops for the Classical Thistle Conference hosted by College of the Ozarks.

My wife Rachel and I were married in 2010 and have six children. We enjoy home made bread and board games.

Teaching Philosophy

I firmly believe that students should be doing the work of learning and that putting students in the posture of discovery and wonder best stimulates student learning. To this end, my literature classes are designed to put students in the position of explorer, with me as a guide. I love hearing what interesting things my students notice from the Great Books we discuss and in hearing the things they have questions about.

Having been profoundly affected by David Hicks and Norms and Nobility, I agree that education is about virtue and piety and that virtue is not merely knowing the truth, but also uniting that knowledge with action. To this end, virtue and vice are key themes in all of my classes.

Statement of Faith

I adhere to the 1689 2nd London Baptist Confession of Faith, as well as the Apostle's Creed and Nicene Creed. Further, I am a member in good standing of Providence Baptist Church in St. Louis, Missouri.
