Rev. Greg Lawrence

about the teacher

Greg Lawrence has been involved in Classical Christian education since 2004 and in a formal teaching capacity since 2017. As a life-long learner, he is passionate about teaching God’s truth revealed in His Word and His world. Greg also serves as a pastor (20 years) and a Chaplain in the USAF (11 years), but his greatest privilege is being married to the love of his life, Lara, for 24 years. Together they enjoy the love and laughter of five children who have all been classically educated. Greg has a B.A. in Bible from Asbury College and a Master of Divinity from Covenant Seminary.

Teaching Philosophy

Godliness, enthusiasm, competency, and clarity. Four words that briefly describe my teaching philosophy. Much of my teaching philosophy is exemplified in Ezra 9:10, “Ezra set his heart to study the law of the Lord and to practice it, and to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel.” Godly character is the foundational principle for godly instruction. While dealing with sacred and secular texts the chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. Thus, a teacher's character is fundamental. Enthusiasm displays the importance of the material at hand. While overblown rhetoric or emotionalism are not countenanced, I do think a personal love for the material communicated is infectious. Of course, a teacher must know the material. Competency and confidence in teaching significantly uphold my final principle of clarity.

Pedagogy is practiced both through the dissemination of information as well as the rumination of information. Dialectic is important to further the goal of training students to be thinkers as well as life long learners. Process is as important as content, transformation is more important than the dissemination of information. All of these considerations play into my teaching philosophy.

Statement of Faith

I am a pastor in the Presbyterian Church in America so in addition to adhering to the Nicene Creed (and other ancient creeds) I subscribe to the Westminster Confession of Faith. I appreciate how the Holy Spirit has been at work in the church of Jesus Christ for the last 2000 years and seek to further the glory of God and the expansion of His Kingdom through my life and ministry.
