Teaching Philosophy
The Christian educator’s first responsibility is to show Christ’s preeminence in all aspects of learning and curriculum (Colossians 1:18). In Christ are “hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3), therefore it is impossible to gain a complete understanding of a subject without first recognizing Christ’s centrality and supremacy in its content. My objective is to guide students toward Christian character development, which will not only challenge them to excel in their studies but will also equip them to fulfill their calling in life. I desire to see every student in awe of what is true, good, and beautiful (Phil. 4:8) while also instructing with passion “the great books” to awaken their imaginations. As teachers and parents, our aim is also to cultivate and equip every student towards personal responsibility and ownership of their studies. It is important for parents and teachers to have a Christian view of paideia, which means, the whole training, education, and discipline of children. David Hicks states that “Christian paideia… urges man to aspire to be holy by loving above self the Creator and His creation” (Hicks). A Christian educator that understands Christ’s supremacy and sovereignty over all things and teaches the liberating arts will reflect this Christian paideia.
Statement of Faith
I hold to the Apostle’s creed, Nicene creed, and the five Solas of the Reformation. I believe the Bible is the authoritative, inspired, infallible, inerrant, sufficient, and living word of God (Ps. 19; Ps. 119; 2 Tim. 3:16; 1 Pet. 1:21; 2 Pet. 1:3-4). The Bible teaches that there is one God (Deut. 6:4-5). God eternally exists in three persons; this is the doctrine of the Trinity. The Scriptures say the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God (Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14; Rev. 1:4-5). The Bible clearly teaches that man has offended and rebelled against a holy God. As a result, man has the total inability to reach God because of his spiritual blindness and deadness from sin. Mankind is separated from God (Eph. 2:1-3). Thus, a sinful man is in need of a Savior from this state of separation. In God’s plan of redemption, there is the incarnation of Christ. God the Father would send his Son Jesus to be born of a virgin (Matt. 1:28-35; Lk. 1:26-38). Christ Jesus, though tempted as we are (Heb. 4:15), never committed a sin (2 Cor. 5:21; 1 Jn. 3:5). So to be reconciled with God there needed to be forgiveness, “for without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness” (Heb. 9:22b). Lost man’s sin is atoned for by the spotless “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (Jn. 1:29). The gospel is, “that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures (1 Cor. 15:3-4).” Jesus then ascended to the right hand of the Father and will return to judge the living and the dead. In the preaching of the gospel a sinful man can come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ by grace alone through faith alone (Jn. 3:15-18, 1 Tim. 2:3-4, Eph. 2:8-10).
