Teaching Philosophy
I believe that knowledge reflects God, our Creator. Thereby, education is incredibly important in helping us to understand our purpose in the world and the One who put it all in motion. I concur with Dorothy Sayers who wrote in her essay, “The Lost Tools of Learning,” that “For the sole true end of education is simply this: to teach men how to learn for themselves; and whatever instruction fails to do this is effort spent in vain.” As an educator if I can equip my students with the tools to continually learn and think for themselves, I will have succeeded.
More specifically, I believe the classical model of education is superior to most modern approaches. The classical model utilizes the three disciplines of grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric. This Trivium is one which aids students to grasp the information well enough to express it effectively and put knowledge into practice. In contrast to simply memorizing and repeating information, the classical model enables students to truly master the material. Therefore, this model enables students to gain knowledge that can be carried on and employed throughout the remainder of their lives.
Statement of Faith
As a Christian apologist, I believe that external evidence serves to affirm the claims of the Bible. However, our faith is reliant on the inner witness of the Holy Spirit. Evidence may help us believe that Christ is our savior. But the Holy Spirit moves us from the belief that God exists to belief in God as our Redeemer.
I believe the Bible is the uniquely inspired, divine, inerrant Word of God and is the ultimate authority on all matters to which it speaks. I also believe salvation comes through Christ alone.
I am a mere Christian in my approach to understanding the Word of God and I am always willing to learn more. As 1 Peter 3:15 (NIV) says, we should “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.”
