Dr. Christi Seaward

about the teacher

Dr. Seaward was born and raised in central California. She received her B.A. in liberal arts and earned her elementary teaching credential at California State University, Stanislaus before becoming an Air Force wife in 1992. During the nomadic years of military life, she lived in various places: Oklahoma, Colorado, South Korea, Japan, Hawaii, and Florida. She is blessed to be a wife and mother of two teenage girls. Dr. Seaward has served as the President of the Protestant Women of the Chapel at Hickam AFB, Hawaii. She also served for three years as a group leader and administrative leader in Bible Study Fellowship. She has worked as a tutor at a community college, tutored in the Laubach literacy method, and taught English as a second language in Japan. She completed her M.A. in Humanities from California State University, Dominguez Hills and her Ph.D. in Humanities with a concentration in Literature from Faulkner University where the Great Books program changed the way she viewed education. Dr. Seaward is a long-time admirer of C.S. Lewis with her interests now extending to more Christian authors in the early to mid-twentieth century. She enjoys cheering for her daughters at swim meets, taking long walks with her husband, following sumo wrestling, and the pleasure of reading.

Teaching Philosophy

My objective in life and as a teacher is to glorify God. As a teacher, glorifying God includes four main goals. My first goal is to impress upon students the importance of the imago Dei so that students view themselves and others with the worth God has ascribed to them. My second goal is to be a co-learner with my students. My third goal is to teach students how to think critically, developing the skills they need to analyze and interpret the world around them. My fourth goal is to point students to God as the source of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. I want to teach because I believe God has called me to teach. I want to be a part of balancing the technological media culture with critical thinking instruction in classic texts and classic ideas. I also want to inspire my students to lead dynamic and thoughtful lives.

Statement of Faith

I consider myself a “mere Christian” and attend Calvary Chapel, a non-denominational church. I believe the Holy Bible is the inerrant Word of God that was written by people through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. I believe the Holy Bible is the foundation for the Christian faith, and the study of Holy Scripture is necessary for a successful life. I believe in the Holy Trinity: God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I believe in God the Father as the self-existent Creator of all things. I believe in Jesus the Son, that He was both God and man, born of a virgin, paid the penalty of human sin with His death on a cross, was buried, and rose again. I believe in the Holy Spirit, that He indwells every believer and He ministers to people by guiding, convicting, teaching, and comforting. I believe that people are made in the image of God. I believe that all people have sinned. I believe that people are saved by believing in and following Jesus as their Savior and Lord.
