About the course

In this course, students will read three books that describe what it was like to grow up when America was growing. These books will carry students into a world where being wild and free meant learning responsibility and self-denial. This course is designed to help students grow in confidence when reading great texts and to shore up comprehension and narration skills. Guiding questions will be provided for each week’s reading and assessment will be based on written narration and class discussion. Class time will be spent in picture study, Socratic discussion, and reading aloud.

Course Objectives:

  • To become familiar with the five story elements (setting, plot, characters, conflict, and theme) present in every story.
  • To build confidence discussing literary works in an academic environment.
  • To make connections across multiple works building a foundation for higher level literary analysis.
  • To develop or grow in the art of narration.
  • To enjoy a story for its beauty and the way it reflects true human experience.
  • To understand how a story can teach us how God made us, takes care of us, and wants us to live.
