About the course
This course will focus on the fundamentals of grammar and essay writing. The first 16 weeks of the class will make use of various reading and writing assignments in order to master the fundamentals of grammar. The student will study the parts of speech (with special emphasis on proper noun and verb usage), capitalization, punctuation, and sentence structure. During the second 16 weeks of class, the student will then apply these principles to larger pieces of writing. The focus will be on composition with an emphasis on cohesion, organization, logical argumentation, and basic citation/bibliography practices.
Course Objectives:
- Master all eight parts of speech and their proper application within sentences.
- Understand the correct usage of capitalization and punctuation.
- Learn and comprehend various forms of sentence structure.
- Develop effective writing strategies to produce cohesive and organized essays.
- Develop methods of presenting a clear and logical argument in an essay.
- Master introductory citation and bibliography practices.
