About the course
In this course, students will explore travel literature through the ages, from the Bible to the works of modern-day explorers. Students will work to connect key themes between and among the texts studied in this course. For example, we will study Faulkner’s use of biblical and Homeric themes in As I Lay Dying. Students will explore this vibrant genre of literature and discover how it embodies the stories of people and their cultures. Along with relevant reading assignments and weekly reading questions, students will receive writing assignments. For each text, students will write a 500-to-1,000-word paper discussing its themes and, near the end of the quarter, a 3,000-word major research paper.
Course Objectives:
- Students will gain an understanding of the travel literature genre.
- Students will engage with ideas such as perseverance, danger, hospitality, and morality. These ideas will be seen across all texts.
- Students will learn how to engage with texts through literary analysis.
- Students will learn how to conduct research.
- Students will become involved in scholarly conversation by incorporating secondary sources into their research assignments.
Texts:
- Exodus, Any ESV Bible
- Homer, The Odyssey
