About the course
In this course, the student will be given a bird’s eye view of the history of philosophy, beginning with pre-philosophical mythology and finishing with some of the most important contemporary philosophers. We will be using the well-known book, Sophie’s World, as a guide for our discussions. Each week the students will read the required chapter from the book, and prepare written answers to a number of questions intended to help the student better understand and think through the ideas expressed in that chapter. In weekly recitations with Dr. Haines, the students will discuss the main subjects addressed in each chapter, and learn not only “about” the history of philosophy, but, also, how to actively engage in the pursuit of wisdom.
Course Objectives:
- Gain an appreciation and understanding of the works of the most important philosophers from the “beginning” of philosophy to the present time, being able to note and recognize how earlier thinkers influenced later thinkers.
- Be able to articulate the views of some of the greatest philosophers and theologians of Western history, noting their weaknesses and strengths.
- Be able to defend the historic Christian faith from the errors of the philosophers, and recognize and use the truths they discovered in this defense.
Texts:
- Jostein Gaarder, Sophie’s World: A novel about the History of Philosophy
