About the course

Old Western Culture is a Christian approach to the Great Books. Early Modern is an integrated humanities course designed to lead the student through Western Civilization’s early modern works of history, literature, and philosophy in a true liberal arts fashion. Students in the Early Moderns course will study the transition from the Renaissance period to the early modern period of Jane Austen and Sir Walter Scott, ending just prior to the twentieth century. Students will learn to think critically about and cultivate answers to controversies surrounding the Scientific Revolution and the perennial human questions explored during the Enlightenment. Further, students will expand their imaginative faculties to envision truth in a context outside of reason alone.

This course has been specially commissioned by the Boniface Hall Homeschool Co-op in Fort St. John, British Columbia (but open to Kepler students) and will follow a slightly different academic calendar than Kepler. For example, our first live meeting will occur on Thursday, September 5th at 11AM-12:30 PM MT/PST. Here is where it might get a bit confusing. When the US States who follow Daylight Savings Time set their clocks ahead one hour on Sun, Mar 10, 2024, and back one hour on Sun, Nov 3, 2024, Fort St. John, British Columbia doesn't adjust its clocks. That means from March 10th to Nov 3, US students will meet one hour earlier (e.g., 10:00 am PDT - 11:30 PDT) to accommodate the time change. Also, since we start two weeks later than Kepler, we only have two weeks off for Christmas break and one week off for Easter.

Course Objectives:

  1. To become proficient in the conversational approach to learning: close readings, interpretive questions, and Socratic discussions of the texts.
  2. To gain a grasp of the literary figures and the historical framework of the time period.
  3. To develop lateral thinking skills by analyzing and synthesizing themes and motifs.
  4. To cultivate an appetite for learning as a way of life (the life of the mind).
  5. To cultivate a desire to pursue the highest things.
  6. To be able to think Christianly and write persuasively about perennial human questions.

About the teachers

Dr. Scott Postma Scott served as a minister for 20 years and a Christian educator for 28 years. He holds degrees in the humanities, classical studies, religion and theology, English literature, and creative writing. He lives in North Idaho with his family.
