About the course

Lingua Latina IUsing Lingua Latina per se Illustrata by Hans Orberg, the ultimate goal of this Latin program is to attain mastery and command of the language so that one can read Latin classics and understand Latin authors in their language. This is effectively achieved through actively using the language—writing and speaking in Latin.

Who is this course for? Latin via Lingua Latina offers a series of courses to students of all levels. It is designed for any student wanting to begin an active study of the Latin language. Thus, prior knowledge and exposure to Latin is not required to begin the course.

How is the course taught? The course is taught (almost) entirely in Latin, with students first learning the meaning of words and phrases in context. The consistent repetition of essential vocabulary and grammatical forms through a written narrative and oral instruction is complemented by an active use of language that develops the student's reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Vocabulary and grammar are always studied in context.

The class goals are to read, listen to, and practice Latin within the context of Lingua Latina Familia Romana and to provide students with many different modes of input as we study Latin together.
Course Objectives: Lingua Latin I will cover chapters 1-15 of the Lingua Latina per se Illustrata, Pars I: Familia Romana text. In this course, the student will master four areas of language: 1. Speech (ars loquendi) - appreciation for and use of Latin as a spoken language. 2. Comprehension (ars narrandi) - knowledge of the storyline in Lingua Latina (characters, events, etc.), demonstrated by answering questions from the current and previous readings and summarizing a chapter or section thereof in your own Latin. 3. Reading (ars legendi) - ability to utilize the tools and methods of Lingua Latina, shown by looking at any heading or marginal illustrations to understand the meaning of new words and looking at the context of the text itself to understand new words. 4. Grammar (ars grammatica) - knowledge of Latin grammar as shown by use of correct vocabulary and grammar in above activities, acting out instructions given in Latin (to practice new words), and describing actions (or pictures, etc.) in correct Latin.
