Session 1: (June 16, 2023) Paradise Lost, with Dr. Jayson Grieser (New St. Andrews College) and Dr. Peter Johnston.
Session 2 (July 20 - 1:00-2:30, PT): Dante’s Divine Comedy, with Joe Carlson, PhD candidate at the University of Dallas, and translator of the Divine Comedy (Roman Roads Press).
Session 3 (August 24 - 1:00-2:30, PT): Dr. Cole Jeffrey (Assistant Professor of English at Charleston Southern University) - Geneva, Switzerland, has the distinction of being the birthplace of two famous Jeans—Jean Calvin, the sixteenth-century Protestant reformer, and Jean Jacques Rousseau, the eighteenth-century radical philosopher. Calvin and Rousseau both played central roles in the development of modernity, but they have radically different conceptions of human nature. Calvin saw people as sinners in need of salvation, while Rousseau saw people as inherently good. For Rousseau, evil is just the product of an unjust society in need of revolution. In his talk, Dr. Jeffrey will discuss three monster novels—Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Dracula—and explain how these stories help us understand the battle between Calvin and Rousseau's ideas in Western culture.
Even if you cannot attend every session, you are welcome to sign up for as many as you can attend.
