About the course

Lingua Latina Prima will have two separate sections - a light section and a rigorous section. Students will need to take an assessment to see which section they should be placed in.

Lingua Latina Prima - Light

This class will teach Timothy Griffith’s innovative Picta Dicta curriculum, using both the online platform and accompanying text book, Latin Primer. This class will focus on learning the basic grammar and logic of Latin by it in the context of pictures and stories. Translation will be used minimally, as the goal is to get the student to understand the Latin through itself.

Course Objectives:

  1. Learn Latin vocabulary through pictures & stories
  2. Learn Latin grammar by seeing the patterns and using it in the context of pictures & stories
  3. Learn to compose Latin sentences, both written and spoken
  4. Learn to read Latin without needing to translate into English

Texts:

  • Picta Dicta Latin Primer 1

Lingua Latina Prima - Rigorous

Using Hans Orberg’s Lingua Latina per se Illustrata (i.e. The Latin Language Shown through Itself) and Timothy Griffith’s innovative Picta Dicta, this class will focus on learning the logic of Latin by putting the grammar in the perspective of history and stories. For this reason, the text is all in Latin and we only translate to check understanding. This helps teach Latin as a coherent language, and this fluidity gives the students the tools to write and speak their own Latin sentences.

Course Objectives:

In this course, the student will master four areas of language:

  1. Speech (ars loquendi) - appreciation for and use of Latin as a spoken language.
  2. Comprehension (ars narrandi) - knowledge of the storyline in Lingua Latina (characters, events, etc.), demonstrated by answering questions from the current and previous readings and summarizing a chapter or section thereof in your own Latin.
  3. Reading (ars legendi) - ability to utilize the tools and methods of Lingua Latina, shown by looking at any heading or marginal illustrations to understand the meaning of new words and looking at the context of the text itself to understand new words.
  4. Grammar (ars grammatica) - knowledge of Latin grammar as shown by use of correct vocabulary and grammar in above activities, acting out instructions given in Latin (to practice new words), and describing actions (or pictures, etc.) in correct Latin.

Texts:

  • Picta Dicta Latin Primer I
  • Orberg’s Lingua Latina: Familia Romana
  • Lingua Latina Exercitia I
