about the teacher

I have taught mathematics for 20 years. I received my Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a minor in Accounting in 1996. My first teaching job was teaching gifted students from 7th-12th grade in the Grant Parish Louisiana School System. I had the opportunity to gain experience teaching 7th grade math, 8th grade math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Advanced Math/Trigonometry. I continued there for 3 years while working on my Masters degree.

After my first child, I chose to stay at home for a while. I have currently been married for 25 years and have three children. My heart has always been in the home since starting a family. To supplement our income, I worked at Sylvan Learning Center and finished my Masters degree in Education. I then got a job as an adjunct instructor at our local college, Louisiana State University at Alexandria. I currently still work there. I have taught remedial courses and College Algebra both full and mostly part-time since 2001 at LSUA. During my tenure at LSUA, I have completed 24 graduate math hours to be qualified to teach college credit math courses in the southern states.

I consider myself blessed to have found a career that I love to do, and be able to minister to my home and family. Problem solving is necessary in all aspects of life. I love helping students understand math, become critical and logical thinkers, and solve problems with God's help in their life.

Teaching Philosophy

The one who does the work is the one who learns. Becoming a problem solver takes effort, but that is what today's employers are looking for. Students must understand that math is not a spectator sport. Students need to actively take notes and complete assignments to fully understand and be able to solve problems.

The student has a responsibility, but I do as well. Being adequately prepared for each lesson is the foundation of instruction. I believe a teacher should present clear expectations to the students. I incorporate a thorough review and sample test to give my students these expectations. An excellent teacher is always trying to improve and make the subject more understandable. If I recognize gaps in learning, I create an assignment to make sure they master the missing piece. I want my students to see the value and wonder of mathematics in the everyday world God created. This helps them to want to learn and makes it more interesting.

Statement of Faith

I believe that the Bible is the infallible word of God and is the solid foundation of all truth. John 1:1-5. There is one God, who has revealed Himself as our Father, in His Son Jesus Christ, and as the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is God manifested in flesh. He is both God and man. I believe that everyone has sinned and needs salvation. Salvation comes by grace through faith based on the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The saving gospel is the good news that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again. I also affirm that the supernatural gifts of the Spirit, including healing, are for the church today.

My family and I are active at Church of Pentecost in Ball, LA. My husband and I have devoted many years to teaching Sunday School and coaching youth Bible Quizzing teams in our local assembly.
